Timothy "Tim" Walker (born 1970) is a British fashion photographer. Tim Walker has worked for Vogue. Staging and romantic motifs characterize his style. Walker also makes film/video works.
On graduation in 1994, Walker worked as a freelance photography assistant in London before moving to New York City as a full time assistant to Richard Avedon. On returning to England, he initially concentrated on portrait and documentary work for UK newspapers. At the age of 25, he shot his first fashion story for Vogue and has continued to work to much acclaim ever since. The title of the series this photograph is from is Atlas and these photographs where published within the LOVE magazine. Tim Walker makes a house pet out of ‘Atlas the Lion’, who is bored to tears in this opulent couture editorial featuring Edie Campbell and Karen Elson for Love magazine’s fall/winter issue. I found out that Tim Walker is a fashion photographer and photographs things because he finds them aesthetically pleasing not because of some deeper meaning .While it is true that the 42 year old Briton’s work has been featured more than that of any other photographer, almost month by month, in the pages of Vogue, there are also images from his portfolio hanging as permanent fixtures at the Victoria & Albert Museum and National Portrait Gallery in London. In 2008 he staged his first major solo exhibition, in conjunction with the publication of his first book Pictures, at The Design Museum and in 2009 received an Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography in New York.
if i where to describe this piece i would say it is photographically pleasing its a interesting juxtaposition a bridge between two worlds. the oviouse use of rule of thirds within this pice with the lions head and the females head laying on one of the lines and her body laying across the bottom line this creates the balance to the photograph ,the light is high key and very flat , nearly all of the feathers within the photograph but some natural light is used through the window to create a feeling that it is a bright and clean place ,the use of the white walls behind the subjected pulls out all the golden colors from the lions main and the darker highlights within its fur ,the photograph is purely symbolic showing strength and power also it could be pensive as for affections reasons rather than having a deep meaning .he reasurches and refreces of other artist to ceate a mood and he will work withother styles models set biulders .fanterseay enviromentsthat dont exsist colaberates with set disingers to make them real
beautiful strangeness
within this pice there is a basic color pallet of creams and browns and blacks with a few decorative pieces of red that stand out within the pice which just give another dimention to the photograph ,the deaph of fild is very much on the model laying in the foreground of the photograph but with the lion not out of focas just the models dress stands out agents the lions darker fur and you can see every ruffle within her dress creating a flowing and beautiful flowing dress, the photographer dose this because the dress is his main feather of the photograph because this is the clothing he is trying to display in a creative form ,the lions fur gives another contrasting texture to the piece creating a natural frizz within its fur this there for works agents the pretty organised ruffels that are displayed on the models dress gives more life and a 3d feel to the photograph.
the patterns used within this piece are geometric with the riben on the models legs cross crossing up her leg it draws your eyes to look at them and for your eyes to fallow up to her body ,the chain within the piece creates a real secnec of space with it trailing in to the foreground and of in to beyond the photograph this gives the viewer an idea of the perspective used.the floor bourdes within the photograph draw your eyes to the head of both subjects within the photograph .
the photograph would have been displayed in the love magazine ,this means that the size of the photograph would have been displayed at about half of an A4 side of paper this being such a small image the photographer dose not over complicate the photograph only using the props he needs to active the balance to the photo.
i think the artist has used the rule of thirds and deapht of field to highlight the areas of the model and her dress also this gives a feeling of space in a quite compacted photograph.the element of this photograph that most interests me is the facted that the focus of the photograph is on the fashion aspected in which it is meant to display.the element .i think that within this piece the focus is the model and her dress but having the lion there shows a strong, protective animal who is fierce and represents beauties ,this is why tim walker has put the lion in to the photograph because it is beautiful and contrast the wight pure looking model in the cream dress ,with lions being carnivorous killers they have a dark and vilont side this really come out with the blood on her hand and the red within the ribens on her legs ,gives a contrast to the pure and prestian white of the dress and background.
The affects of these formal elements create a feeling of balance and also creates the shocking afecticly peaseing photograph that he tryes to display the clothing within.i think the artist used Photoshop to create the Evan tones on the model and to make the lions fur stand out from the wall behind also they would be using external lights to give it that high key lighting.the mood of this pice is lonlyness and sadness becouse of the look the lion is giveing the model and the facted that the model is laying on the ground with blood on her hand and the facted that the lion reprasents darkness and vilonce but the girl shows puritey almost laying there angelicly showing the butie in death.the artist mad this artwork to diplay the clothing of the model and to engage and shock the aurdiance ,he dose this by not only photographing the model with the clothing he addds the lion and props to make the aurdiance think about the subcntiose thoughts that are provocked by this image.the artist has played on the storie butie and the beast by haveing the pure girl chained up with the beast looking molencoly at her as he lets her lay there so peacfully.when i first saw this image i thought that it had some deeper meaning and that the lion and girl have some sort of sugnifacance to how its displayed but then when reasurching deeper in to tim walkers work i found that he is a fastion photographer and creates pices that feacher in fastion magazens so the clothing and excessorys are the real focas withing his work ,but being an artist he uses props and diffrent settings to make the clothing more exciting and disarable to the viewer.
this artist relates to my work becouse tim walker shows how animals are connected to humans not only by them being beautiful but by there meanings and the emotions shown by them within photographs ,tim walker uses animals to give a mood and deeper meaning to his otherwise un original photographs ,this is relevant to my projected becouse animals and human communicate not through speaking l but through emotions and actions this is why tim walker shows the relationship between man and animal.i think tim walkers work dosent relate to my work in other ways becouse his work is used to show clothing and fation and that is not the meaning i am looking to provay. when reasurching what people think of this work another person said that' defantly like it ,its confusing and hard to understand it ,because the lion gives of mixed messages and it seems to represent a comferteng figuar like a dog and the setting is odd for the photograph'.
i would give this work the title 'buties beast ' i think this appropriate because the photograph has a feeling of sadness and regret almost like the lion has killed her but then lies by her regreating what he has done destroying her pureity, other titles it could be are 'angel of death' or 'gadian' these alternative titles would affected the interpretation of the pice because they would show that the lion is a simbel or a representation of death.Walker’s work is more than the sum of its parts. Like the artist Mark Rothko, whose expansive canvases leave room for the viewer’s thoughts to fill, the photographer’s dreamlike fantasies are a world created not just for himself but for his audience.
to compare tim walker to another artist id link him to jeremy hilder because both of them have there photographs in magazines but unlike time walker hilder has got meaning behind his photographs for example these photographs are of stray dogs he met and he has cleaned them up and photographed them like there pampered dogs that have a really nice life ,walker's photographs are made to be asphetcicly pleasing and they have animals within them to represent a feeling and to shock an aurdiance, hilder has used these animals to make a shocking point that these animals that look so good in these photographs have had a bad life and are strays creating a message that you shouldent buy a new puppy you should go and get one from a dog pound and they will love you more for it,the fact that these photographs are in the sunday times review rather than a fashion magazen means that the artificial that comes with it will have some real content and a clear messige. the dog are photographed with bright coloured backgrounds which they are sitting on they are in a relaxed position with brightly coluerd clashing colours these make the dogs stand out ,the light is high key and flat like tim walkes photographs they both use a clear bright glossy finish to there photographs for the magazine.the simulariteys between the two photographs are that time walkers have animals to represent feelinga and emotions where as jereny hilder uses the animals as the center of the photograph this is used to create a picture that provocking thought from the aurdiance.

'They’re all dreams: every picture is a fantasy. It’s me asking them, inviting them, to enter into that, whether it’s a dark and sinister mood or a beautiful fairytale. It’s escapism – that’s what it is.
I’ve always had a very strong sense of entertainment and the need to entertain visually'

my first idea of a response was to tim walker was to take photographs with the animals and there owners and so i organised a day where i could take photographs with a lady who has a dog and i went out and started takeing photographs with the dog and her and her friends ,i was trying to get photographs that showed intermacey but in a really aspeticly pleasing way i wanted to get the style in which tim walker was using by having one bright colour coming through.
My second response :
This image/set of images communicates this idea of role reversal between humans and animals. Animals being the more dominant and powerful role within the relationship. It makes viewers think about how animals are naturally wild and can not always be tamed by humans. ‘ ..... Quote’......This is similar in a way to Sebastian Magnani in that both Magnani and Walker portray the animal as being superior. They are different however because Walkers is about pure wild physical power and Magnani is about looking up to the animals for their positive attributes.
the meaning behind doing that is to try to get viewers to empathise and put themselves in the position we so often put animals in.
